The Hotel Bären, or "Bear," gives this view of Grindelwald in the Bernese Oberland its particular identity. Grindelwald became a stopping point for travelers heading into the Alps in the late 1800s, and hotels like this one served walkers, climbers and sightseers arriving to see the surrounding peaks and glaciers. The print was made by the photochrom process, a Swiss method that applied several colored inks, printed from stone, over a photographic base to produce vivid souvenir views.
