Where the Gemmi Pass climbs above Kandersteg toward a rocky saddle and then drops into the Valais, this photochrom shows the hotel that sheltered travelers on the crossing, with the Wildstrubel massif rising behind it. Photochrom was a color process that Swiss printers developed in the late 1880s, and the Detroit Publishing Company later sold views like this one to American buyers through its catalogues, including the 1905 edition that lists this print. For walkers and mule drivers who had spent hours on the mountain path, an inn at the top offered a welcome place to rest, which is why the hotel suits a gallery board on taverns and inns.
