The hotel at the Passhöhe near the Wildstrubel, in the Bernese Oberland, is what sets this view apart from other Alpine scenes. Photochrom prints like this one were made in Zürich from black-and-white negatives transferred to lithographic stones and then colored by hand, and the Detroit Publishing Company sold them in America. Hotels on high passes such as this one served walkers and travelers crossing the Alps, so the building also records late nineteenth-century Alpine tourism. The catalog dates the print to 1905, though the view itself was likely made between about 1890 and 1900.
