Set on a shelf above the Lauterbrunnen valley, Mürren was a small mountain village reachable mainly on foot or by rail, and its Hotel des Alpes catered to the visitors who came to hike and enjoy the view of the Bernese Oberland peaks. The print is a photochrom, a process developed in Switzerland that turned black-and-white photographs into multicolor images using a series of hand-prepared stone lithographs. Detroit Publishing Co. sold such prints in America as souvenirs of European travel, and this one appears in its 1905 catalog of Swiss views. Its colors give a sense of how travelers wanted the Alps to look at the turn of the century.
