Interlaken, the resort town between Lakes Thun and Brienz in the Bernese Oberland, drew many nineteenth-century travelers, and this view shows the Grand Hotel Victoria, one of the large hotels built to serve them. The photochrom process, a Swiss method that combined a photograph with color applied from several stone plates, produced it. Detroit Publishing Company issued it in its 1905 catalog of Swiss views, though the scene itself dates to the 1890s. The soft, layered colors are typical of the process and show how photographers of the period presented European resorts to American buyers.
