The Grand Hotel Victoria in Interlaken sits in the Bernese Oberland, a town set between Lakes Thun and Brienz with the Jungfrau massif in view to the south. The photochrom process used for this print was a Swiss technique, developed in Zurich in the 1880s, that produced vivid color from a set of photographic plates. Detroit Publishing Co., which issued this numbered view in its 1905 catalog, sold such prints to American travelers and armchair tourists. In the late 1800s, Interlaken was a fashionable stop for visitors touring the Alps, and grand hotels like this one catered to them, which makes the picture a useful record of how Swiss resort life was presented to a North American audience.
