Kandersteg's Hotel Victoria stands in a Bernese Oberland village, with the snowy Blümlisalp massif rising behind it. In the 1890s, Kandersteg was a stop for walkers and climbers heading toward the Gemmi Pass, and hotels like this one housed the travelers who came to see the Alps. The photochrom process used for this print was developed in Zürich, where workers colored black-and-white photographs with multiple lithographic stones. The Detroit Publishing Company later marketed these Swiss views in America, so the picture also reflects how European mountain scenery reached American buyers.
