Set in the Bernese Oberland, the Lutschinen Hotel at Widenmann is a reminder of how tourism reshaped the Swiss Alps in the late 19th century, when travelers arriving by rail and carriage sought lodging close to the glaciers, meadows, and river valleys. This print is a photochrom, a color process developed in Zurich in the 1880s that transferred a photograph onto lithographic stones, with each color added by hand. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sold these views in the United States, issued it in its 1905 catalog of Swiss scenes, so it shows how the Alpine resort was packaged for American buyers.
