The Scheidegg Hotel stood on the Grosse Scheidegg pass in the Bernese Oberland, a high route between Grindelwald and Meiringen that carried travelers across the Alps and offered broad views toward the Jungfrau and its neighboring peaks. Like many inns on such passes, it served walkers, coach passengers, and mountaineers who needed a meal and a bed before going on. This print is a photochrom, a color process developed in Zurich in the late 1880s that turned black-and-white negatives into vivid color prints. Its popularity with tourists in the 1890s helped spread images of Swiss hotels and landscapes around the world.
