The Summit Hotel stood at the top of the Brünig Pass, the ridge road linking Lucerne with the Bernese Oberland. The pass had carried carriage traffic for centuries, and when the railway opened over the summit in 1888, the hotel became a stop for travelers crossing between the two regions. This color photochrom comes from the Detroit Publishing Company's 1905 catalog of Swiss views, which sold these reproductions to American buyers. The photochrom process layered several lithographic stones to build up its color, and that vivid palette is a large part of why these views still stand out.
