Interlaken, set between Lakes Thun and Brienz in the Bernese Oberland, is shown here through its hotels, which were built for travelers who came to see the Alps. The print is a photochrom, a color process developed in Zurich in the 1880s that combined photography with hand-worked stone lithography, and the Detroit Publishing Company issued this view in its 1905 catalog. Dated only to about 1890 to 1900, it captures the years when Swiss resort towns were expanding quickly on tourism.
