Grindelwald, a village at the foot of the Eiger in Switzerland's Bernese Oberland, is the setting here, with the hotel placed in the valley below the mountain's steep face. By the 1890s, Grindelwald drew a steady stream of visitors who came for mountain walks, glacier views, and the chance to see the peaks up close. This print is a photochrom, a color process developed in Zürich that was built on hand-colored lithographic stones, and Detroit Publishing Co. sold such views to American buyers in the years around 1905. The catalog number places it among the company's Swiss scenes, which were prized for their vivid, almost painted color.
