The view centers on the Hotel Trübsee, a mountain inn beside a small lake above the Engelberg valley, a destination for travelers climbing from the valley floor in the 1890s. The print is a photochrom, a process developed in Zürich that transferred a black-and-white photographic negative onto a set of lithographic stones, with each stone inked in a different color to build up a tinted image. Photochroms of this kind were sold as souvenirs during the period's boom in Alpine tourism, when hotels like this one offered rest and meals to visitors drawn to the mountains.
