Perched above the Giessbach falls on the shore of Lake Brienz, the Giessbach Hotel was a showpiece of the Bernese Oberland tourist trade, reached by steamer across the water and, from 1879, by a funicular up the slope. This color print comes from the Detroit Publishing Co.'s 1905 catalog of Swiss views, which sold scenes like this to American buyers eager for images of European travel. The photochrom process, developed in Switzerland in the 1880s, produced bright, painterly color that made hotels and waterfalls like this one popular souvenirs.
