Few views in this series are set as high as the Faulhorn, a peak in the Bernese Oberland, where the hotel stood on the mountain itself rather than in a village below. Travelers who climbed the summit path often stayed overnight there for the view of the Alpine peaks at sunrise. This photochrom print, a color process that used lithographic stones, was issued by the Detroit Publishing Co. in its 1905 catalog of Swiss views. It was made in the late 1890s, when mountain hotels were drawing growing numbers of tourists to the Alps.
