Perched on the Stanserhorn above the town of Stans in central Switzerland, this hotel drew visitors who rode a cable railway up for the Alpine view. The photochrom process behind the image, developed in Zürich in the 1880s, layered several lithographic stones over a photograph to produce its soft, painted color. Detroit Publishing Company sold these views in America, and this one is number 1846 in its 1905 Swiss catalog, a reminder of how tourism to the mountains was growing around 1900.
