Perched on the summit of Mount Rigi above Lake Lucerne, the Hotel Rigi Kulm drew visitors who rode the rack railway up to watch the sunrise over the Alps. This view, likely made in the 1890s, shows the hotel against the surrounding peaks in the soft, saturated color that photochrom printing was known for. The process was Swiss, combining photography with stone lithography and a separate stone for each hue, and the Detroit Publishing Company sold such views to American buyers as souvenirs of European travel.
