The hotel at Arolla sat in a small alpine village in the Val d'Hérens, a valley of the Swiss Valais, where walkers and climbers stayed before heading up into the surrounding peaks and glaciers. The print was made by the photochrom process, developed in Zurich in the 1890s, which combined a black-and-white photograph with several hand-inked lithographic stones to produce color. Detroit Publishing Co. sold such views in the United States under a numbered catalog, and this one is listed as no. 9250 in its 1905 Switzerland series. The record dates it only to between about 1890 and 1900, the years when photochrom views of European resorts were most popular with travelers.
