The Gemmi Hotel stood on the high route between the Bernese Oberland and the Valais, where the Gemmi Pass dropped steeply toward the spa town of Leuk. Travelers crossing the pass relied on inns like this one for rest before the long descent to the thermal baths below. This print is a photochrom, a process developed in Zürich in the late 1880s that layered several lithographic stones over a photograph to build up color. Detroit Publishing Company sold such views in America as souvenirs of Swiss travel.
