Set high on the Simplon Pass in the Swiss Valais, this hotel served travelers on the road linking Switzerland with Italy. That road was commissioned by Napoleon and completed in the early 1800s, and by the 1890s the pass drew steady streams of tourists, so a hotel at the summit offered a place to eat, rest, and wait out bad weather. The picture is a photochrom, a process developed in Zürich that combined a photographic image with color applied from several stone printing plates. Detroit Publishing Co. sold such views widely in the United States as souvenirs of distant places.
