The view centers on Monte Rosa, the great massif on the Swiss-Italian border, seen from the Hotel Schwarzsee, a mountain inn in the Valais above Zermatt. Visitors who made the climb to the small lake beneath the Matterhorn often stopped at the hotel, which made the spot a familiar destination for walkers and early alpine tourists. The picture was made by the photochrom process, a method that transferred a black-and-white photograph into a multicolor lithograph, and it belongs to a series of Swiss views issued in the 1890s. Its soft, painted-looking colors show how the process was meant to make distant mountain scenery feel immediate to people who would never travel there.
