Leysin is a mountain village on a sunny terrace in the canton of Vaud, and this print shows its Grand Hotel, a building that drew guests for the clean air and views. In the years this view was made, Leysin was becoming a place where visitors came to rest and recover away from city life. The Photochrom process, developed by the Swiss firm Photoglob in Zürich, turned photographs into multicolor lithographs, so this is a commercial souvenir image of the kind sold to tourists. It belongs to the firm's Views of Switzerland series, print no. 1430.
