Two grand hotels, the Cecil and the Savoy, stand along the Thames Embankment in this 1901 stereograph card, with the granite obelisk known as Cleopatra's Needle close at hand. The Savoy opened in 1889 under Richard D'Oyly Carte, the impresario behind the Savoy theater, and was celebrated for its electric lighting. The Cecil, opened in 1896, was built to rival it in size and luxury.
