Few pictures on this board show two grand hotels side by side, which makes this view of the Netherland and the Savoy unusual. Both stood in the fashionable stretch of Fifth Avenue near Central Park in the 1890s, when wealthy travelers and New York society were drawn to the district's new luxury hotels. The card was issued by Alfred S. Campbell of Elizabeth, New Jersey, as No. 172 in his series. Stereographs like this one were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, where the two nearly identical photographs fused into a single image with apparent depth, making them a popular form of home entertainment at the time.
