The corner of Broadway and 29th Street, where the Hotel Gilsey stood, sat in the busy stretch of Midtown Manhattan just south of Herald Square. By the 1910s the district was filling with theaters, shops, and hotels catering to travelers and theatergoers. Hotels of this kind often had their own bars and dining rooms, which made the lobby and street-level life around them a natural draw for the city's saloon culture. The record dates the picture to about 1916 and notes that the caption information is unverified, so the exact date and details of the scene should be checked against other sources.
