One of the best-known hotels on Atlantic City's oceanfront, the Traymore helped define the resort's identity in the early twentieth century. This c1920 print by New York photographer Irving Underhill, registered under a U.S. copyright, dates from the years when rail excursions brought vacationers from Philadelphia and New York to the Boardwalk in large numbers. Grand hotels like the Traymore were central to that seaside boom, serving as both lodging and social centers. The Traymore was demolished in 1970, so the photograph now preserves a landmark that no longer stands.
