Two grand hotels stand side by side on Fifth Avenue in this stereograph, a view that places the Netherland and the Savoy together on one of Manhattan's most fashionable avenues. St. Paul's Ingersoll View Company issued the card around 1903, when stereographs were a popular way for Americans to see distant cities through a hand viewer. Hotels like these catered to wealthy travelers and society guests, and the street scene shows the carriages and pedestrians of the period. The card is also a record of the avenue's growth into a center of luxury hotels and residences at the turn of the century.
