Two large hotels, the Netherland and the Savoy, stand side by side on Fifth Avenue in this 1903 view, a pairing that shows how the avenue near Central Park was filling with luxury hotels at the turn of the twentieth century. The area around 59th Street drew wealthy travelers and residents, and the new hotels followed them with broad façades, tall windows, and street-level entrances meant to impress passersby. Copyright registration by T.W. Ingersoll indicates the scene was issued as a commercial view for sale to the public, a common way that city streetscapes were documented in these years.
