Harrogate, a spa town in North Yorkshire, drew Victorian visitors who came to drink and bathe in its mineral and sulphur springs, and the Prospect Hotel was one of the establishments that served them. This print is a photochrom, a process that combined photography with hand-prepared lithographic stones to produce colored images with a painted quality. The Detroit Publishing Company, which held American rights to the process, sold such views to travelers and collectors, and this one appears in its 1905 catalog of English scenes. The photograph itself was likely made sometime between about 1890 and 1900.
