From the end of the pier, the Royal Hotel at Lowestoft stands on the Suffolk coast of eastern England, in a seaside town that drew holidaymakers by rail in the late Victorian years. The image is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland in the late 1880s and later distributed in the United States by the Detroit Publishing Company, which issued this view in its 1905 catalog of English scenes. The process gave photographs a soft, hand-painted look, which suited resort views like this one, where the hotel and promenade read as a picture of leisure.
