The Royal Hotel in Dawlish, a seaside town on the south coast of Devon, is the subject here, a reminder that many Victorian English resorts were built around hotels that catered to visitors arriving by rail. The print is a photochrom, a process that produced color images by combining photographs with hand-applied color, and it was issued by the Detroit Publishing Company, which sold these views of British towns to American buyers in the 1890s and early 1900s. Its catalog listing in 1905 shows how widely such scenes circulated, offering armchair travelers a glimpse of English street life and the hotels that served it.
