Groudle Glen is a wooded ravine on the east coast of the Isle of Man, the self-governing island in the Irish Sea, so the catalog's "England" heading is loose. The picture pairs the glen's steep greenery with the hotel that served visitors who came to the island's seaside resorts in the 1890s. The print is a photochrom, a process that used hand-retouched color plates made from black-and-white photographs, and this copy comes from the Detroit Publishing Company's 1905 catalog J. Its color was added by hand, so it reflects both the photograph and the workshop that finished it.
