Grange-over-Sands sits on the edge of Morecambe Bay, and after the railway reached it in the 1850s it grew into a genteel seaside resort, so this view looks out over the hotel's gardens toward the town. The bright, painterly color comes from photochrom, a Swiss process that printed each hue from a separate lithographic stone, which gave late Victorian travel views their soft, glowing finish. The Detroit Publishing Co. sold these views in America, and this example is listed in its 1905 catalog of English scenes, though the picture itself was probably made in the 1890s.
