Few places in England drew Victorian sightseers like the limestone gorge at Cheddar in Somerset, and this print shows the Cliffs Hotel built to accommodate them. It is a photochrom, a color photomechanical process that layered several printed inks to give the image its tinted, painterly look. The Detroit Publishing Co. issued this copy in its 1905 catalog of English views, as print number 10922. The picture itself is dated only loosely, to between about 1890 and 1900, so it captures the hotel as travelers of that decade would have known it.
