Groudle Glen, on the east coast of the Isle of Man, is the setting here, with its hotel and tram station sitting in the glen. The view dates to roughly the 1890s, when seaside resorts on the island drew steady crowds of holidaymakers. It is a photochrom, a color process in which a photograph was transferred to stone and hand-tinted, and this copy was issued by the Detroit Publishing Company in its 1905 catalog of English views. That catalog number shows how photochrom scenes of British places reached American buyers at the turn of the century.
