Few places on this board sit as close to the water as the harbor hotel at Colberg, a Baltic port in the German province of Pomerania that is now Kołobrzeg, Poland. The hotel stood beside the harbor, where the pilot station handled ships entering and leaving the port, so the building served both travelers and the maritime trade that shaped the town. Detroit Publishing Company issued this photochrom in its Views of Germany series, and the process built up color from several lithographic stones over a photographic base, giving the scene its soft, painted look. Views like this were made for travelers and collectors who wanted a colorful record of northern German towns.
