Mulhouse's town hall, shown here under its German name, Mulhausen, marks a city that changed hands during this period. The city had been French until the Franco-Prussian War, and after 1871 it was administered within the Reichsland Alsace-Lorraine, so this view comes from the German years before France regained the city after World War I. The color comes from the photochrom process, a Swiss method using multiple lithographic stones, which the Detroit Publishing Company sold in the United States as travel views of Germany and Europe.
