Leipzig's central market square, with the Rathaus, or town hall, at its edge, is the focus of this view. The Renaissance town hall dates to the mid-1500s and housed the city's government, while the square around it had long been a center of trade and the city's famous fairs. This print was made by the photochrom process, which transferred a photograph onto lithographic stones, each inked in a separate color. The Detroit Publishing Company issued it in its series of German views, made roughly between 1890 and 1900.
