Ruhla, a small town in the Thuringian Forest, is known for its clock and watch manufacturing, and this view centers on the Hotel Landgraf, whose name recalls the landgraves of Thuringia who ruled the region from the nearby Wartburg castle. The image is a photochrom, a color process that layered several hand-prepared stone or glass plates to tint a photograph, and the Detroit Publishing Company sold such prints to American buyers in the 1890s and early 1900s. Its catalog number places it in the firm's Views of Germany series, a group of travel scenes that let viewers at home see European towns they would likely never visit.
