Unter den Linden, the broad avenue running east from the Brandenburg Gate, was one of Berlin's most fashionable streets in the 1890s, and the Victoria Hotel stood on it as a place to stay and dine. The photochrom process behind this color view combined photography with stone lithography, and the Detroit Publishing Company sold such images to American buyers under its own catalog, where this one appears among its "Views of Germany." The print's saturated colors show how European cities were presented to travelers and armchair tourists at the time, and its date is given only as a range from about 1890 to 1900.
