The Waldkater Hotel sits in the wooded Bode valley of the Harz mountains near the town of Thale in central Germany. The picture is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland in the 1890s that printed several lithographic stones over a photograph, which gives the scene its soft, painted look. Detroit Publishing Co. sold these views in the United States, and this one appears as print number 8296 in its 1905 German catalog. Such prints offered American buyers a colorful glimpse of European travel destinations around the turn of the century.
