A view taken from the Hotel Landgraf in Ruhla, a small town in the Thuringian Forest of central Germany, sets this print apart from the other German scenes on the board. Photochrom prints like this one used a Swiss process that applied color over a photographic base, and the Detroit Publishing Company sold such views in its American catalogues, where this example is listed as print number 16899. Ruhla was long known for watchmaking and clockmaking, which shaped its economy and character. The record dates the image to roughly 1890 to 1900, so it shows the town as travelers of that decade would have seen it.
