Set on the Baltic coast of Rügen, Germany's largest island, the Strand Hotel at Sassnitz belonged to the seaside resort life that grew along these shores during the 1890s. Sassnitz was also a harbor town, and its rail and ferry connections were expanding, bringing travelers from Berlin and beyond. The picture is a photochrom, a color process developed in Zurich that combined photographic images with hand-applied tints, and it comes from a German views series that the Detroit Publishing Company distributed in the United States.
