Split, known here by its Italian name Spalato, was a busy Adriatic port in Dalmatia when this view was made, and the building shown is the Hotel de Ville, the town hall. The old town grew up inside the walls of the palace the Roman emperor Diocletian built in the early fourth century, so civic buildings there stood among layers of ancient stone. The color comes from the photochrom process, a Swiss method that printed several stone plates over a photograph, and Detroit Publishing Co. sold such views in the United States as scenes of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
