Sulden, a village in the Ortler Alps of the Tyrol, was a remote mountain settlement when this hotel was built, and it served climbers and walkers headed for the Ortler peaks. The print was made by the photochrom process, a Swiss method of color lithography that used multiple stones and hand retouching, and the Detroit Publishing Company sold these views in America. It appears as number 9360 in the company's 1905 catalog of Austro-Hungarian scenes. The inn's tavern subject reflects its role as a place where travelers gathered for food and drink after long days in the mountains.
