The Hotel Penegal is a mountain inn in the Tyrol, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and this print shows it as a resort destination for travelers who came to the Alps in the late 1800s. It is a photochrom, a color process that used several separately inked stone or metal plates, each hand-finished, to build up the tints over a photograph. The Detroit Publishing Company sold these views in the United States under its own catalog, and this copy is number 9337 from its 1905 listing. The hotel's dining and lodging facilities reflect the tourist trade that grew across the Alpine regions during this period.
