Karersee, or Lake Carezza, is a small alpine lake in the Dolomites, and this view places the hotel on its shore with the Latemar range rising behind it. The Tyrol was then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and by the 1890s mountain hotels like this one were drawing travelers who came for the scenery and the clean air. The photochrom process used here transferred a black-and-white photograph to stone and then added color by hand in several passes, which accounts for the soft, glossy tones. Detroit Publishing Company sold such views in American catalogues, and this one appeared in its 1905 series of scenes from the empire.
