Trafoi was a small alpine village in the Ortler range, on the road that climbs toward the Stelvio Pass, and this view shows its hotel, a place that catered to travelers making the mountain crossing. The Stelvio road, built under Habsburg rule in the 1820s, made the village a stop for carriages and, later, for tourists drawn by the high-mountain scenery. The picture comes from the photochrom process, which produced color prints by combining photographs with hand-applied color stones, and Detroit Publishing Co. sold such views in the United States under its Views of the Austro-Hungarian Empire series.
