Trafoi, a village at the foot of the Stelvio Pass in the Ortler Alps, is the setting here, and the view centers on the hotel the record calls the Bellevue, also known as Schöne Aussicht, or "beautiful view." In the 1890s the valley was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and the Stelvio road, completed in the 1820s, brought a steady stream of travelers, carriages and mountaineers past inns like this one. The print is a photochrom, a color process developed in Zurich that Detroit Publishing Co. sold in America under its own catalog, here catalog J from 1905, print number 6836.
