Sulden Hotel stands in the village of Sulden, in the Tyrolean Alps of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, at the foot of the Ortler massif, a range that drew climbers and walkers to the area. The photochrom process behind this print, a color method developed in Switzerland and finished by hand from a photograph, gave such mountain scenes soft, saturated tones that appealed to travelers. Detroit Publishing Co. included the view in its 1905 catalog of Austro-Hungarian scenes, where hotels like this one served as stopping points for visitors heading into the high Alps.
